for your ears: The Smiths, "I Know It's Over"

Late night drive.  Windows rolled down.  Morrissey crooning at a heightened volume.  Hair flowing. Tears streaming.

This song means a lot to me.  I believe these lyrics are some of the greatest ever written.  Good grief, Morrissey sings with such a genuine vulnerability, accented by such powerful words. Words that go so well with the unfortunate emotion that accompanies reeling with a sad ending.  Can't you just feel the heartache?

"If you're so funny
then why are you on your own tonight?
and if you're so clever
then why are you on your own tonight?
if you're so very entertaining
then why are you on your own tonight?
if you're so very good looking
why do you sleep alone tonight?
I know because tonight is just like any other night
that's why you're on your own tonight
with your triumphs and your charms
while they are in each other's arms"

Sometimes when you're sad, it's okay to listen to sad songs.  It can be okay to wallow, really it can.  Accepting one's current state is a difficult hurdle that life sets up from time to time.  Feigning a falsified emotion won't get you far.   A smile will come eventually, but one must take it all as it comes.

And, as an added bonus, here's the late Jeff Buckley's heart-wrenching cover.

"Love is natural and real
but not for you, my love
not tonight my love"
